Full Compatibility List and Supported Devices of Fiber Optic Transceiver
One of the biggest advantages of third-party optical transceiver is their strong brand compatibility, which helps enterprises cut hardware costs without sacrificing performance. Our 1G SFP 80km optical transceivers are fully tested and certified to work seamlessly with the following Cisco hardware lines:
Access & Aggregation Series: Catalyst 2960-X/XR, 3650, 3850, 4500E, 6500 Series
Next-Gen Core Platforms: Catalyst 9200, 9300, 9400, 9500 Series
Spine/Leaf & Core Cages: Nexus 3000, 5000, 7000, 9000 Series (e.g., N9K-C93180YC-FX)
Note: When deployed inside 10G SFP+ or 25G SFP28 interface ports, manual configuration commands (speed 1000) must be executed to lock the interface at 1G.
Enterprise Edge Routers: ISR 4300, 4400 Series, ASR 900, ASR 1000 Series, Catalyst 8300 Series
Main Application Scenarios of Fiber Connection Module
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) Interconnects: Interlinking regional corporate facilities, municipal data hubs, and university campuses spread across separate county lines or geographic territories up to 80km apart.
Long-Distance Utility & Infrastructure Backhauls: Routing remote infrastructure telemetry, smart grid monitoring networks, or highway IP surveillance streams back to a centralized Operations Center.
Data Center Interconnect (DCI) Core Extensions: Creating a secondary, physically isolated 1G control line, replication loop, or management channel between primary and backup corporate data processing facilities.

Q1: Can the Cisco GLC-ZX-SMD be used in Cisco Nexus switches?
A1: Yes, absolutely. The GLC-ZX-SMD utilizes the standard 1000BASE-X protocol, which is natively understood by Nexus SFP+ (10G) or SFP28 (25G) slots. Simply enter the CLI interface configuration and hard-code the rate down using the command: speed 1000.
Q2: Does this long-haul optical module support DDM/DOM for real-time monitoring?
A2: Absolutely. It features real-time Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM), allowing administrator to monitor TX/RX power levels, temperature, volage and laser bias directly through the CLI using the show interfaces transceiver command.
Q3: What is the main difference between GLC-EX-SMD and GLC-ZX-SMD?
A3:The main difference lies in the wavelength and distance. The GLC-EX-SMD operates at a 1310nm wavelength and is designed for extended distances up to 40km. The GLC-ZX-SMD switches to a 1550nm wavelength (which has lower signal loss in glass) and uses a more powerful laser to achieve ultra-long-haul distances of 70km to 80km.
Q4: Do I need an optical attenuator for short-range links?
A4: YES. This is a high-power ZX laser. If your fiber link is shorter than 20km, you MUST use a 10dB-15dB LC optical attenuator to prevent the high-power signal from damaging or over-saturating the receiver.
Q5: Is this Cisco GLC-ZX-SMD an industrial-grade module?
A5: No, the GLC-ZX-SMD is Commercial Grade (0°C to 70°C). If you are plugging it into Cisco Industrial Ethernet switches (like the IE-2000 or IE-4000 series) deployed in uncooled outdoor environments, you should use the GLC-ZX-SM-RGD (-40°C to 85°C)or an Extended Temperature module like the SFP-GE-Z (-10°C to 80°C) to prevent cold-weather link failures.
