A2: Link distance limits and laser transmission intensity. The standard SFP-GE-LX-SM1310 (LX standard) uses a regular Fabry-Perot laser optimized to clear maximum spans up to 10km. The SFP-GE-LH40-SM1310 uses an amplified, highly stable DFB laser engine capable of extending that exact same data pipeline up to 40km over standard single-mode lines.

A4: Yes, an inline attenuator is required for short loops. Because this transceiver uses an amplified transmitter to push data across 40km, its optical launch output is intense. Connecting two LH40 modules directly on a test bench using a short patch cable without a 5dB to 10dB optical attenuator will risk overloading and permanently damaging the delicate photodiode receiver circuit.

Q5: Can this module down-negotiate to Fast Ethernet (100Mbps) speeds?
A5: No. This is a fixed-rate 1G optical module. It does not feature multi-rate downward compatibility for 10M or 100M lines. The remote transceiver on the other side of your fiber run must also be a matching fixed 1Gbps long-haul optic.
