Primary Application Scenarios of SFP Copper Transceiver
Service Provider Central Offices: Connecting Ciena packet networking platforms to local out-of-band management switches or copper patch panels.
Carrier Ethernet Demarcation: Providing a standard 1G RJ45 copper handoff interface to end-users from a fiber-fed customer premises equipment (CPE) switch.
Data Center Interconnect (DCI) Management: Linking monitoring tools, local network-attached storage (NAS), or local servers directly into Ciena transport chassis slots.

Q1: What is the main difference between Cisco GLC-T and GLC-TA?
A1: The primary difference is speed negotiation. The GLC-T uses a 1000BASE-X host interface and is designed strictly for fixed 1000Mbps (1Gbps) operation. The GLC-TA uses an SGMII host interface, which allows it to support tri-rate auto-negotiation down to 10Mbps and 100Mbps speeds.
Q2:Can I use the GLC-T module to connect a 100Mbps Fast Ethernet device?
A2: No. The GLC-T module is 1000BASE-T, support only fixed 1000 Mbps speeds. If you require backward compatibility with legacy 10/100 Mbps devices, you should select the GLC-TA module instead.
Q3: What cable type should I use with this module?
A3: Standard unshielded twisted pair (UTP) or shielded twisted pair (STP) Category 5e or Category 6 copper network cables will work perfectly up to the 100-meter limit.
Q4: Does the GLC-T support Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM)?
A4: No. Copper SFP modules use electrical voltage to transfer signals rather than fiber lasers, meaning optical diagnostic telemetry does not apply.
Q5: Can I plug a GLC-T into a 10G SFP+ slot?
A5: Yes, provided that the specific SFP+ slot on your Cisco switch supports backward compatibility with 1G modules. You may also need to manually lock the port speed configuration to speed 1000 via the Cisco IOS CLI.
