What Is the Difference and How to Choose? 1G SFP LX vs. SX Fiber Optical Transceiver

От Jack January 3rd, 2026 154 просмотров
In the rapidly evolving world of optical communication, where 400G and 800G optical transceivers dominate the headlines for AI and data centers, a common question still arises among network engineers and IT purchasers: "What is the difference between 1G SFP LX vs. SX modules, and which one is right for my project?"
As a premier original source factory with over 15 years of experience, HYTOPTODEVICE (HYTODEVICE TECHNOLOGY) has provided professional optical solutions to thousands of global clients. Understanding these "workhorse" modules is essential for building a stable, cost-effective Gigabit network.

1. What Is an SFP Transceiver and Why Does 1G Still Matter?

The SFP (Small Form-Factor Pluggable) module is a compact, hot-swappable transceiver used for both telecommunication and data communications applications. It interfaces a network device mother board (for a switch, router, media converter, or similar device) to a fiber optic or copper networking cable.

Why 1G SFP is Irreplaceable

Despite the push for higher speeds, 1G SFP modules remain essential in:

  • Enterprise & Campus Networks: Perfect for office connectivity and VoIP.

  • Security Systems: Ideal for long-distance video surveillance backhaul.

  • Cost Management: They offer a stable, economical way to maintain existing infrastructure without a full 10G/400G overhaul.

At HYTOPTODEVICE, we continue to manufacture high-quality 1G SFP transceivers to ensure our partners can achieve efficient operation while controlling budgets.

2.1000BASE-LX  SFP vs. 1000BASE-SX SFP: Key Differences at a Glance

The main difference between 1G SFP SX and 1G SFP LX lies in the wavelength, fiber type, and transmission distance

Feature 1000BASE-SX (Short Reach) 1000BASE-LX (Long Reach)
Wavelength 850 nm 1310 nm
Fiber Type Multimode Fiber (MMF) Single-mode (SMF) / Multimode (MMF)
Typical Distance Up to 550m Up to 10/20km (SMF) / 550m (MMF)
Connector LC Duplex LC Duplex
Application Intrabuilding / Short distance Interbuilding / Campus / Long distance

2.1.1000BASE-SX (SX = Short Wavelength)

The "S" stands for Short-haul. It uses 850nm lasers and works exclusively over multimode fiber. It is the most cost-effective solution for connecting switches within the same server room or across floors.

2.2.1000BASE-LX (LX = Long Wavelength)

The "L" stands for Long-haul. It uses 1310nm lasers and is primarily designed for single-mode fiber (up to 10km). However, it is highly versatile as it can also run over multimode fiber using a mode-conditioning patch cord.

3. How to Choose Between LX and SX?

Choosing the right SFP module depends on your existing cabling and the scale of your project.

3.1.Check Your Cable Type: If you have OM1/OM2/OM3/OM4 (orange or aqua cables) already installed, SX is usually the default choice. If you have OS2 (yellow cables), you must use LX.

     3.2.Confirm the Distance: * < 500 meters: SX is more economical;

                                                    > 550 meters: LX is mandatory to ensure signal integrity.

3.3.Future-Proofing: If you are building a new network across a large campus  or factory area, office zone. HYTOPTODEVICE recommends deploying 1000BASE-LX with single-mode fiber, as it allows for much easier upgrades to higher speeds in the future.

4. Common FAQ: Can You Mix SX and LX Modules?

A frequent query we receive at our factory is: "Can I plug an SX module at one end and an LX module at the other?"

The short answer is: No. Because they operate at different wavelengths (850nm vs 1310nm), they cannot "talk" to each other directly. However, you can use both types within the same network on different links. For example, use SX for floor-to-floor connections and LX for building-to-building links. Just ensure that each independent fiber link has matching transceivers at both ends.

5. Fiber (SX/LX) vs. Copper (1000BASE-T): When to Switch?

While 1000BASE-T (RJ45 copper) is easy to deploy, HYTOPTODEVICE fiber solutions are superior when:

  • Distance exceeds 100m: Copper is limited to 100 meters. 1G SFP RJ45 transceiver  is better choice.

  • EMI Resistance: Fiber is immune to electromagnetic interference, making it vital for industrial or high-voltage environments.

  • Space & Weight: Fiber optic cables are thinner and lighter, saving valuable space in high-density data centers.
